Chapter 10

A month had passed, and it was now July and Kandy was getting ready for the 4th of July. She was going to spend the holiday with Hose, and his best friend, Billy and his wife Rita. Rita was gorgeous with Carmel skin, and reminded her of the beautiful actress Halle Berry. They could be twins. The two of them had hit it off, and they were becoming best friends. Kandy needed a best friend.

They were sitting in Rita’s kitchen drinking wine, and waiting for the men to barbecue. “I love your mansion, Rita. How did you and Billy meet again?”

Rita smiled. “I was dating this very abusive man, and he abused me for the last time,” she cried. “I stabbed him in his leg, called the police, and Billy was the one who came to my apartment and took the call. Other women came forward, and it was self-defense.”

“I’m so sorry,” Kandy cried.

“I thought Gaines loved me, but he was a very abusive bastard. He didn’t like women because his mother abandoned him when he was little, and she never came back. He blamed women for his mother’s actions. I thought he was the love of my life. He treated me like a queen at first, but then if I forgot the salt or cooked his rice wrong he went off, and I was his punching bag. When I met Billy, I almost lost him. I thought all men were violent. Billy loved me so much that he stayed with me. I’m so blessed. He’s upset about his friend being killed. They just found his body in the river.”

Kandy wanted to spit out her wine, but she had to continue to be in control. Why was this always happening to her? “Why?”

“His friend Robert Dane was killed. They found his body.”

Kandy was literally going to be sick. “Wow,” she cried.

“He had been shot about six times. Billy almost passed out.”

“I’m so sorry,” she cried. “What do they think happened?”

“Robert was a gambler, so he probably got mixed up with the wrong thugs or something. His present wife was going to divorce him, but he begged her to stay, and he was seeing a shrink for his gambling problem. I can’t believe he’s dead. They found a note saying pay up or die.”

Kandy smiled to herself. Horace was the best. “I’m so sorry. Did you know him?”

“His wife, and children came to dinner.”

“Wow,” Kandy cried. “I’m sure he’s sick about this.”

“Life is so funny, but I’m glad Hose has found you in his life. He’s a great human being and he deserves someone who doesn’t want him for his money. Hose bought us this mansion, and we pay him rent, of course.”

Kandy laughed. “How much is the rent for a six-bedroom mansion?”

Rita laughed. “We pay him five hundred dollars a month.”

“Wow,” Kandy replied. “Why?”

“Because Billy doesn’t like taking advantage of his friend’s kindness. It’s the only way we were able to move into this mansion. I love this place, and our children attend private schools.
